Regionalisms are very common in the United States. Here in Southeast Texas, every brand of string trimmer is a weed eater. These are all brand names that entered our everyday vocabulary, and we use them as generic terms now. Think about things like Band-aids, Velcro, and Sheetrock. Turning a brand name into a generic term is actually pretty common. Purists might say that weed wacker is an incorrect term because it isn’t what the inventor called it, but that is up for debate as “Weed Eater,” and “Weedwacker” are both brand names, meaning they are not intended to refer to the non-branded product. The inventor of the Weed Eater coined the name, but then others began making similar products by different names. Why are there different names? Let’s go over the reasons these two terms have become muddled.
